Once you have
enabled the spam filter (as described in the instructions
available by following this
link), you can configure a filter in Outlook Express
to automatically send incoming messages identified as probable
spam into a special spam folder.
These directions
will step you through adding a folder called "spam"
to your Outlook Express folder list, and then creating a
filter to put messages that contain "[SPAM]" in
the subject line into the spam folder.
STEP 1:
Open Outlook Express. Right-click on the "Local Folders"
file in the folder list, then click on New Folder in the
menu that pops up (see below).

STEP
2:
For the name of the folder, we suggest "spam".
Type the name of the new folder, then click OK.

STEP
3: Click on the Tools menu, then Message Rules, and then
Mail.

STEP
4: Check the boxes for "Where the Subject line
contains specific words" and "Move it to the specified
folder". When you click these boxes, information about
the rule appears in the next box down. Type a descriptive
name for the rule in the bottom box, (but don't click on
OK just yet.)

STEP
5: Click on the "contains specific words"
link in the Rule Description window. Type "[SPAM]"
in the space provided, then click the Add button, and then
OK.

STEP
6: Click on the "Specified" link to select
the folder that the tagged messages will be moved to, which
will usually be "spam". Then click OK.

STEP
7: The rule window should now be complete. Click on
OK to save it. The filter is now active, and messages tagged
as spam will be automatically placed into the proper folder.
Additional
suggestions on dealing with the spam are presented in the
next section, below.
Spam
Management
Unfortunately,
dealing with unsolicited bulk email is a fact of life.
Efforts
to block or filter spam can reduce the day-to-day burden
of reading one's email by sorting most of the junk into
a separate folder. However, an investment of some time is
still necessary in order to deal with messages that get
by the filter, and the occasional legitimate message that
is flagged as spam.
The
following suggestions may be useful to you, as well as to
our ongoing efforts to reduce the amount of nuisance spam
email messages that attempt to flood all of our mailboxes:
- Forward any
unsolicited messages that get through your spam folder
to spam@okiemail.net
before deleting them. When forwarding spam from Outlook
Express, use the "forward as attachment" option
to ensure that we receive the complete message including
the headers.
You can select and forward more than one message at a
time. Just hold down the control key while clicking on
messages to be forwarded. Then right-click on one of the
selected messages, and click on "forward as attachment".
Address the message to spam@okiemail.net
and click send.
- Periodically
scan your spam folder for legitimate messages. You can
"drag and drop" legitimate messages that you
find in your spam folder back into your regular inbox
or other appropriate folder.
- You can help
us analyze patterns and identify violators by forwarding
the massages in your spam folder to spam@okiemail.net
before you empty it. You can select all of the messages
in the folder at once by clicking on one of the messages,
then typing CTRL-A to select all messages. Then right-click
on one of the selected messages, and click on "forward
as attachment". Address the message to spam@okiemail.net
and click send.
Before forwarding
all messages from your spam folder, be sure to delete
any non-spam messages (or move them into another folder).
- Because we
the spam complaints seriously, please take care to only
report truly unsolicited bulk email as spam. If someone
you know - including a company you have done business
with or have requested information from - is sending you
unwanted email, please ask the sender to stop or unsubscribe
from the list, as applicable.
If you continue to receive unwanted non-spam email from
someone who you have asked to stop, please forward such
messages to postmaster@okiemail.net
along with an explanation of the situation.
